Characters In Transition

This workshop will focus on the visual aspects of characterization. Participants will make use of sign mime and explore the use of characters with mimed props, playing multiple characters and character transitions.

SDEA Masterclass: Designing Assessment Literacy in Drama Education with Dr Peter Duffy

As drama practitioners, how then do we utilise assessments as a means to sit beside students in their learning? How do we help our students shape their understanding of the practice and craft of theatre and the content of instruction? Through the process of planning formative and summative assessments, participants in the masterclass will learn how focusing on specific, authentic tasks within instruction and reflection strengthen teaching.

Facilitated by leading teaching artists in the industry, the practical 40-hour course is designed to guide participants to consider essential principles all drama instructors need to be familiar with when preparing and conducting drama lessons with groups. The course results in a Certificate of Completion recognised by the National Arts Council – the minimum pedagogical qualifications required for NAC-AEP instructors leading the 2017/2018 cycle.

SDEA Talk: Drama, Cognition and Creativity with Dr Peter Duffy

This presentation draws upon decades of cognitive science, creativity, drama/theatre and education research to demonstrate why enactive pedagogies such as drama should figure centrally into schooling practices. Peter’s research makes the case for embodied and social cognition in learning as well as look at the role that metaphor and cognitive linguistics plays in how we conceptualise and frame learning.

Exploring the Work of Jacques Lecoq Workshop

In this practical workshop, participants will explore Jacques Lecoq's theories on levels of tension through physical play. The levels of tension will be applied in character creation and to structure improvised dramatic scene work.

Devising Workshop in conjunction with Goodman Arts Centre Open House

In conjunction with the Tanjong Goodman Open House 2017, SDEA presents an interactive workshop that looks into the process of devising by engaging participants to express their views on issues that matter through games, improv and stimuli like text or pictures.

Commedia dell'Arte Masterclass for Teaching Artists is back!

Following an over-subscribed masterclass last October, SDEA is pleased to welcome back Commedia dell'Arte master - Marco Luly! This November, Marco will be facilitating two exclusive masterclasses for drama educators, directors and artists. Commedia dell'Arte offers a very valuable training in improvisation, comedy, mask and pantomime. Furthermore, the discipline improves self-awareness and participation in group work.

2016

SDEA's Masterclass: Self-With-Others Actor Training

On 13 February 2016, John Britton led a masterclass on ‘Self-With-Others’ - an improvisation-based physical approach to training as a performer. The masterclass was a positive experience for participants who were a mix of drama educators and theatre practitioners. The approach encouraged a creative daring and helped them understand how to empower and embolden the people they work with.

Getting The Best Out Of NAC-AEP Seminar (4th Run)

The fourth run of the Getting The Best Out of NAC-AEP Seminar on 26 April 2016 was facilitated by Peggy Ferroa and Serene Chen. The Getting The Best Out of NAC-AEP Seminar guides teachers on selecting appropriate NAC Arts Education Programmes (NAC- AEP) in line with school's objectives, student profiles, desired outcomes and budget.

Masterclass Series: Communicating With Puppets

Artistic director of Paper Monkey Theatre Ltd and puppet master Benjamin Ho facilitated the ‘Communicating with Puppets’ masterclass on 16 January 2016. Benjamin introduced different kinds of puppets like rod puppets and hand puppets as well as shed light on which best matched different student profiles.

Masterclass Series: Directing for the Drama Facilitator and Teacher

The Finger Players' Company Director Chong Tze Chien facilitated the ‘Directing for the Drama Facilitator and Teacher’ masterclass on 23 January 2016. It was a popular masterclass which unpacked the complexities of theatre direction and covered skills such as script interpretation via stage blocking, effective communication with actors, incorporating design and staging devises in storytelling.

SDEA Masterclass: Commedia dell’Arte for Teaching Artists

SDEA is pleased to have master of Commedia dell’Arte Marco Luly back to facilitate a special masterclass for teaching artists. The masterclass unpacks the main features of the theatre form such as movement, mime and vocal modulation. It also provides you the opportunity to experience actor-training with a focus on body expression, body mastery and improvisation to cultivate self-awareness as well as precision in the use of gestures and voice.

A series of 4 workshops is designed to lead participants to consider some of the essential principles all drama teachers need to be familiar with when preparing and conducting drama lessons with groups. On 19 September 2015,18 participants were treated to a boundary breaking and invigorating Swopshop led by Singaporean theatre actor and founder of Pink Gajah Theatre - Sharda Harrison.

Masterclass Series: Creating an Atmosphere of Possibility

Experiential therapist Sharmini Winslow facilitated the energizing psychodrama masterclass ‘Creating an Atmosphere of Possibility’ on the 31 October 2016 at the Winslow Clinic. 20 participants were treated to an enriching psychodrama experience that changed their perspectives about challenging moments in their teaching journey. For most, it was their first encounter with psychodrama and it proved to be an eye-opening experience.

Masterclass Series: Devising

On 14 November 2015, Singapore Polytechnic lecturer and theatre practitioner Oniatta Effendi facilitated a masterclass on devising attended by 15 drama educators. She provided a unique lens about the role of the facilitator and sparked a discussion on the importance of developing a spirit of civic-consciousness in youths through devise work.

Asian Civilisations Museum Workshop

SDEA conducted a workshop on 27 January 2014 for ACM administrators and art educators on using handheld museum replicas as group management and educational tools; and sharing how to match arts educators to ACM programmes.

Getting the best out of NAC-AEP Seminar (2nd Run)

Singapore Drama Educators Association (SDEA) and National Arts Council (NAC) have co-designed a programme, “Getting the Best out of Arts Education Programmes (AEP)” for teachers who plan and purchase NAC-AEP Arts Education Programmes for their students. This is a rerun seminar for those who have missed out previously and especially for teachers who are new to buying NAC-AEP Arts Education Programmes.

Masterclass: Arts as a Tool in Community Engagement with Janet Pillai

How do artists select appropriate mediums and develop appropriate programming for the communities they work with? This materclass is designed specially for artists, artist educators and pedagogues of all art forms who would like to look at innovative methods to inspire and challenge community groups.

Getting the best out of AEP

This programme helps teachers to make informed choices when selecting appropriate arts programmes across different art forms (dance, drama, music, literary and visual arts) that are suitable for their students’ needs.

Masterclass: Sourcing Within with Ang Gey Pin

Learn to build your creative materials as well as bridge creative impulses and intuitions to the audience. Performance will then become a means of connecting thoughts, intentions, associations, imageries and human relations. This masterclass lead you to self-discover and find refreshing new ways in physical and vocal embodiment and organic approach to performing.

Masterclass: Drama as a Cross-Curricular Pedagogy by Pamela Bowell

Human beings learn naturally through drama. Our brains are ‘wired’ for it. This workshop facilitated by Pamela who is Chair of National Drama, the UK’s leading subject association for drama teachers and theatre educators, explores how teachers can move on from using one or two individual drama strategies and start to build effective dramas by combining strategies together.
